Chaé Skincare Regimen – 4 Simple Steps for all skin types
Chaé’s four-step routine (cleanse or exfoliate, mist, serum, moisturize) with the products to reach for at each step, whatever your skin type.
Meet astaxanthin, the red-algae antioxidant known as the King of Carotenoids — what it does, where to find it, and which Chaé formulas contain it.

Looking for a way to support your overall health and the look of your skin? This superpower algae can help you not only feel well but be well. Make it part of your daily routine, and you’ll have found one of the secrets to aging gracefully.
The short version
Astaxanthin comes from an organic marine microalga, Haematococcus pluvialis. Because of its molecular structure and unique features, this red algae compound is known as the King of Carotenoids, and it’s one of the most potent antioxidants found in nature. It can help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which can contribute to the development of chronic diseases.
Researchers have also studied astaxanthin’s potential anti-cancer and anti-diabetic properties. It supports cardiovascular health, brain function, eye health, endurance, performance, recovery, joint health, and organ function.
As one of the most powerful antioxidants in nature, astaxanthin neutralizes free radicals at remarkable rates. Here is its reported scavenging capacity compared with other well-known antioxidants:
| Compared with | Astaxanthin’s scavenging capacity |
|---|---|
| Vitamin C | 6000× |
| Natto | 3100× |
| Nitric oxide | 1800× |
| Lycopene | 1800× |
| Nucleic acid | 1100× |
| Vitamin E | 1000× |
| Coenzyme Q10 | 800× |
| Carotol | 800× |
| Anthocyanin (OPC) | 700× |
| Tea polyphenols | 320× |
| Beta-carotene | 110× |

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and red algae are abundant in antioxidants, vitamins, and protein. Added to your skincare routine, astaxanthin helps skin look clearer and cleaner and helps calm the look of breakouts for a more even complexion. It’s a choice that pays off now and in the future.
These findings are supported by multiple studies. You can browse research on astaxanthin at PubMed Central.
Your body doesn’t produce astaxanthin, but it’s found naturally in algae and krill, and in fish and shellfish such as salmon. It’s what gives them their distinctive magenta color. A six-ounce serving of wild salmon provides about 3.6 mg of astaxanthin, and wild salmon contains more than farmed salmon because of its natural diet.
According to nutritionist Dawn Blatner, people take in an average of only 11 mg of astaxanthin per year — and to reap its benefits, you’d need about that much per day.
You may see astaxanthin listed under other names, including astaxanthine, astaxantina, dihydroxy-3,3′-dioxo-4,4′-beta-carotene, microalgae, microalgue, micro-algue, ovoester, 3,3′-dihydroxy-4,4′-diketo-beta-carotene, 3S,3′S-astaxanthin, 3R,3′R-astaxanthin, and 3R,3′S-astaxanthin.
